When deciding on what kind of diapers is best for your family, there is more than just the cost of the diapers to consider, such as the cost and water resources of the laundering of the reusables, where the disposable diapers end up, the cost of disposable wipes and reusable wipes, the time it takes to care for reusable diaper covers or how realistic it is to compost a disposable diaper. We could go on, but you get the point – the list is endless.
We’d like to provide you with a little more information on the average difference between the initial investment in reusable diapers and the overall cost of other diapering options. We want to share this for informational purposes only, not to encourage or discourage the decisions that are right for individual families.
On the modest side, a child will go through 10 diapers in 24 hours (more for younger children and less for older children) which can cost roughly 33˘/disposable diaper. Consider that cost every day for 2.5 years and the average investment in that time is a little more than $3000. To buy three dozen fitted diapers and a dozen covers and three dozen inserts for the same 2.5 years will cost close to $1200. The difference may seem alarming at first glance, however each family makes the choices that fit their budget, their interests and their needs and we want to encourage and support these choices, period. We do not want to push any family onto a course that doesn’t fit their needs and instead want to present all the options available to aid in making the most conscientious decisions possible.
It is our job to create an atmosphere free of judgment and restrictions while giving families the space they need to make the healthiest choices available.
